Thermal Zinc Spraying

Thermal Zinc Spraying in Worthing, Horsham, Brighton and the surrounding areas

What is Thermal Zinc Spraying?

Thermal Zinc Spraying, also known as metallizing or arc spraying, is a surface coating process where molten zinc is sprayed onto a substrate using a specialized thermal spray gun. The zinc is heated to its melting point and then atomized into fine particles using compressed air or inert gas. These particles are propelled onto the surface of the substrate, where they rapidly solidify and form a protective coating.

How does Thermal Zinc Spraying work?

Preparation: Before the spraying process begins, the surface of the substrate must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, rust, or contaminants. This ensures proper adhesion of the zinc coating.

Spraying: The zinc wire is fed into the thermal spray gun, where it is heated to a molten state using an electric arc or flame. Once molten, the zinc is expelled from the gun nozzle and propelled towards the substrate at high velocity.

Coating Formation: As the molten zinc particles impact the substrate, they flatten and bond to the surface, forming a dense and uniform coating. The rapid cooling of the molten zinc upon contact with the substrate creates a metallurgical bond, ensuring excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Layer Building: Multiple passes may be made with the spray gun to achieve the desired thickness of the zinc coating. Each pass adds a new layer of zinc, increasing the overall durability and protective properties of the coating.

Advantages of Thermal Zinc Spraying

Corrosion Protection: Zinc coatings provide excellent corrosion resistance, even in harsh environments such as marine or industrial settings.

Longevity: Thermal zinc coatings have a long service life and require minimal maintenance, reducing the need for costly repairs or replacements.

Versatility: Thermal zinc spraying can be applied to a wide range of substrates, including steel, aluminum, and even concrete, making it suitable for various applications.

Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to other corrosion protection methods such as hot-dip galvanizing, thermal zinc spraying offers lower upfront costs and faster application times while still providing robust protection.

Environmental Benefits: Zinc is a natural element and non-toxic, making thermal zinc spraying an environmentally friendly coating option. Additionally, zinc coatings can be recycled at the end of their service life, further reducing environmental impact.
